Abstract:


Discusses the application of robotics to the rehabilitation of neurologically impaired patients.

The first section discusses the transfer of robotics technology from industry to rehabilitation and the potential benefits for neurologically impaired patients.

The second section describes characteristics of robots.

The third section reviews the various types of user interfaces that are available and factors to consider in the selection of suitable controls.

The fourth section discusses the range of motor impairments that occur in neurologically impaired persons and the different needs of patients with stable conditions, progressively deteriorating conditions, and improving conditions.

The last section considers the need to evaluate robotics performance or the extent to which an individual's needs are being met by robotics assistance.
